Dimitri had been supplemented by a fiddler and a drummer. The trio were quite good and were setting up when Mila asked them to play ‘Volga Mat’ Rodnaya’, a folk song that tells that Razin, who is a captain, captures a Persian princess and spends one night with her. His men accuse him of weakness and that he has become a ‘woman’ in the morning. In answer to them, he throws the princess into the water and goes on a drunken binge with his men. The symbology of the dance and song were not lost on Konstantin or his friends.

Mila’s second dance was to ‘Lyubo, bratsy, lyubo’. A song about a Cossack army leading forty thousand men to a battle at the Terek River after which the riverbank was covered in dead men and horses. The fatally wounded hero remembers his wife, his mother, and his steed and mourns his fate. That wasn’t lost on Konstantin or any of the others either.

She ignored their table from then on, leaving it to another of the girls. She strutted more than usual and let herself be pulled onto laps as she took orders. All of this kept Konstantin and his friend’s attention on her and allowed several agents to sit close by and listen into their conversation.

After the bar closed and everyone had left, she was helping clear up when Konstantin came through the door. He was drunk.

“Mila, I need to talk to you.”

“You said all you had to.”

“That was the committee, not me!”

“I thought you were a strong man. You turn out to be weak.” Her fists clenched in anger, tears ran down her cheeks.

“I am strong, I will take you with me despite what they say.”

“I don’t believe you. When you sober up you will do just what they tell you.” Scorn dripped from every syllable.

“No, I won’t.” He stood as erect as his drunkenness allowed.

“Come and tell me that in the morning.”

She walked away, leaving him swaying as if in a strong breeze.
